Day 4 : Hand and Finger Movements [Flamenco Home Challenge]

Mercedes has a very distinct way of moving her hands, and one thing that’s for sure is that no matter what, they ALWAYS look good. (Because she’s kind of obsessed with hands.)

So, naturally, we work our arms and hands like crazy in her class.

It's Day 3 of the 10-Day Dance Like You're In Class With Mercedes Ruíz Home Challenge. I hope you enjoyed yesterday's exercise for keeping the shoulders down.

Let's get on with today's focus.

Day 3

Mantener el mismo plié,

Mercedes says this a lot in class.

Maintain the same plié.

Or, as I like to say, don’t bounce.

In flamenco dance we must remain grounded. The upper body projects upward while the lower body connects with the floor.

Day 2: How To Keep Your Shoulders Down [Flamenco Home Challenge]

Below you’ll find my reflections along with a new home activity...

I applied yesterday’s challenge activity to a remate and marcaje por bulerías since I’ve been wanting to improve my bulerías.

I noticed that thinking about the breath before I started set me up to breathe more fluidly while I was dancing. While it was easier to focus on breathing during the marcaje than it was during the remate (probably because of the complicated rhythms, footwork, and body slapping) I could execute the remate with more ease when I was aware of my breathing. What about you? What did you notice?

My Trip to Jerez

I have danced and taught Afro Cuban, Haitian and Brazilian dance for many years. I'm the sort of explorer who likes to "go to the source" so I have gone to these countries many times on dance/study trips. There were a few great trips, some ok, and two really miserable experiences. 

I'm fairly new to flamenco -had 2 years in at the time of this trip- but became intrigued by the "por fiesta" dances so I started looking around for ways to study in Spain, particularly Jerez. I discovered Laura's trips, and it seemed like a structure that would work well for me, so I went last October. It was without a doubt one of the best, richest experiences that I've had, and here are some reasons why.

Why I Started Dancing Flamenco ~ How Did You Get Into It?

I was a junior in college and struggling through Spanish class.⁣

The professor spoke only in español, and I hardly understood a thing. ⁣

Feeling confused, behind, and overwhelmed most of the time I did not particularly enjoy the class. ⁣

However I am full of gratitude for the experience.⁣

You see, had it not been for this class, I'm not sure I would be dancing flamenco today.⁣

Figure it Out ... ( figuridout )

"I'll figure it out." Ricardo hears that a lot when he comes to Portland.

Over and over again he hears it.  Namely in rehearsals.

Probably because there is always A LOT to figure out.

MUCHO.

"We'll figure it out."

He became kind of obsessed with the phrase on a past visit.  I said it many times.  Perhaps because I felt so overwhelmed.

When I wasn't saying it he'd ask me to remind him how to say it.

And then one night he asked how to spell it,

This is about getting therapy accidentally.

Accidentally and without a lot of work.

Thursday was tough. For various unforeseen reasons. I wanted to just stay home and feel sorry for myself.

But, I didn't.

How to turn the Wrong Class into the Right Class

Ok, so here's the part two to yesterday's post that I promised you.  Where I tell you how to turn any class into an ideal class for you. Because sometimes class feels too easy.  And other times it feels too hard.

I've been in both situations.

And here's what I've discovered

When class feels too easy, it's usually because I've got my lazy pants on. No seas floja, Laura.

When class feels too difficult, it's usually because hard-on-myself me has taken over. Tranquila, chiquilla. 

We can get a lot or a little out of class

And it's really up to us.  I mean it.

Basically there are two main concepts we need to understand, one to make class harder and another to make it easier.  But before we get to those, some specific ideas on how to make the most out of whatever class you find yourself in.

There is no such thing as a leveled class

Not really. It may be called Beginning.  Or Advanced.

And that name might tell me about the pace of the class.  Or about the type or amount of information and material that will be given.

But what does it really mean?

Is what I view as beginning the same as what you view as beginning?

Can I expect to find people all at the same skill level because the class is called intermediate?

Does the name of the class tell me where I belong?

No and not necessarily.

I have some thoughts on figuring out which class you "belong" in and some more thoughts about what to do should you find yourself in a class that feels like the wrong level.

Intuition and How Flamenco Makes it Stronger

I've told you before about how much I learn from flamenco. And I don't mean how much I learn about flamenco. Naturally I learn a lot about flamenco. But I'm talking about other things. Flamenco has kind of become one of my mentors.

Sí, un mentor para mí.

Trust

I have some issues when it comes to following my intuition.

I want to hear it. I want to trust it. I want to act on it.

If only it were that easy.

Fortunately flamenco has a lot to tell me about that.

Bulerías especially. Because with bulerías there are certain things I need to do. And as it turns out, these things also assist me in going with my gut.

Be there completely

Focus and attune to what is happening with the palmas, guitar, cante, jaleos. Be there, truly be there.

Be Present

Listen a lot

To the compás. To the guitar. To the palmas. To the cante. When I'm dancing and when I'm not. Listen and really get to know it.

Listen

Allow what needs to happen to happen

I must let myself feel the music. And let myself feel whatever I'm feeling.

Allow

Respond to what I hear in a way that feels right to me

Follow what's happening with the music. Respond to the signals I pick up on. When the singer resolves, let my body reflect that.

Act

Flamenco requires trust. If I don't trust while dancing, well, then, I’m only kind of sort of doing it.  And, by the way, I still find myself there often. But, it's okay. Because each time I do and notice and reflect on it, I learn something about myself.

I am a Person Who Does Her Own Thing - Mercedes Ruíz | The Fifth Interview

Ok, so it's the final interview with Mercedes...for now that is.  And today we get into some of the nitty-gritty. Earlier Mercedes told me that she encountered a lot of problems on her way to becoming a flamenco dancer.

This got me thinking.  Wondering about those obstacles and what they were.  But more importantly, wondering about how she handled them.

Immediately I thought about the flamenco world and it can be easy to feel left out.  How it can be easy to feel like you don't belong.  For me at least...because I let myself.  I wondered if any of that went on for Mercedes.  Especially as she is from Jerez, where people have some strong opinions about flamenco.  And how it is to be done.  And who can do it.

Little books

I can't imagine learning flamenco without pens and paper.

I really can't.

On paper I take notes. On paper I figure things out. On paper I put the thoughts from inside my head. And there's just something I like so much about the feel of the pen moving atop the paper...

I often write in little books.

They helped me a lot in the beginning, in Sevilla. They help me today. And they helped me a lot in Jerez.

Sinking In

I want to talk about sinking in. I want to talk about breaks.

I want to talk about stuff that relates to the wisdom of the body.

I want to talk about productivity.  

And how they're all connected.

Connected and overlapping...

Breaks

Last Wednesday I went to the studio early before class to practice.  I felt tired.  So tired.  I walked in the door and suddenly felt even more tired.  I opened the curtains, opened the windows, turned on the fan.  Still so sleepy.  Sleepy all over.  Quite obviously my body was trying to tell me something very important.

Take a break.

So, I did.  I had to.  There was actually no other choice.

Do you know what just happened?

In class I'm often saying that soon the body will just know what to do, without having to think about it so much. Because it's true.

Take the hands for instance.  Las manos.

Hand movement is one of those elements of flamenco that seems to get just about everyone.  Even professionals who come to flamenco from other dance forms have told me this aspect drives them crazy.  Getting them to look good is one thing.  Then how much harder steps become when we add hands… and fingers,  Ay!  Another thing.

Still, there comes a time when they just start moving on their own.  Fluidly.  Doing things we didn't know they could or would do... It can be surprising when this first happens.

But there is a catch.

Do you wonder what to do when it's your turn to get up and dance?

Many great questions keep coming up during teoria class.  It is exciting.  I love questions. Sooooo, one that came up yesterday evening while looking at different circumstances in a por fiesta setting was …

"What if I just get up and do the clapping and walking part then sit back down?"

In other words,

Can one do only the salida and let that be that?

And the answer is...

No.
