Bulerías de Jerez | Viernes con una Letra

I'll be honest. In the beginning, I wasn't a huge fan of flamenco singing.

It wasn't that I didn't like it.

It intrigued me that's for sure. But I didn't feel inclined to sit around and listen to it a whole bunch.

It didn't take long before that changed.

I guess it happened early on during my time in Sevilla, on that first flamenco trip.

And actually, while I was initially drawn to the baile, the cante played a huge roll in getting me hooked on flamenco ... and keeping me in it.

Just like the compás.

And now,

Well, you know how it is now.

Which brings me to the letra:

Que Nadie Vaya a Llorar | Viernes con una Letra

I told you that today I'd post a video of Manuel Molina singing...

Along with another letra:

Que Nadie Vaya a Llorar

Que nadie vaya a llorar el día que yo me muera
es más hermoso cantar aunque se cante con pena
que nadie vaya llevar ni flores ni ropa negra
no me vayáis a enterrar para pudrirme bajo tierra
es más hermoso cantar mientras mi carne se quema
y luego me ofrecéis al mar o al aire o sobre la arena o en un jardin,
me da igual
pero cuando yo muera que nadie vaya a llorar

Nobody cry the day that I die
It's more beautiful to sing even if one sings with sorrow
Nobody bring flowers or wear black clothes
Don't bury me just to rot underground
It's more beautiful to sing while my flesh burns
And then offer me to the sea, or to the air, or over the sand, or in a garden,
It doesn't matter to me,
But when I die, nobody cry

You can watch another version here, one that will be part of the upcoming Flamenco Sin Fronteras documentary.

Oh, and you might want to check this out as well.

At his funeral, people sang as he requested, and his daughter, Alba Molina wore white.

Why The Sun Can't Live With The Moon

The sun and the moon have been hanging out together in Portland today. I guess they're getting along.

(Below you can see the crescent moon I've been admiring in today's blue sky.)

Sol y Luna

El sol le dijo a la luna
vivir contigo no puedo
porque cuando digo blanco
tú siempre me dices negro

To All Cat Lovers & All Cat Haters

Cat lovers and cat haters (dislikers?), come one, come all. It's a coletilla por bulerías that we sang with Oscar last month, and it has to do with kitty cats:

Me araña
me araña el gatito
échalo pá trás

He scratches me
The cat scratches me
Get him away

(By the way, I myself am a cat lover.)

This is a version of this one.

A note about dancing bulerías and coletillas:

In class, Oscar talked about how when a singer runs out of coletilla while singing for you, he might start doing jaleo instead. (And Ani always says once you hear just jaleos, it is definitely time to get out!)

Feliz finde ~ Happy weekend!

Free Demo Class with Sol 'La Argentinita!'

Sol 'La Argentinita' is in town with the Portland Opera's production of Carmen. Lucky us! And the luckiest bit of all is that she's sticking around after the shows to give us workshops. They're happening February 18-22, and she'll be giving a free preview class next Wednesday, February 11 at 5:30pm. Come meet her and even dance and sing a bit too...

Nobody to Wash My Dirty Shirt | Viernes con una Letra

Will 2015 be the year to go to Spain? More on that below, but first a letra:

Bulerías
Popular

Qué dolor de mi mare
tengo la camisa sucia
no tengo quien me la lave

The sorrow of my mother
I have a dirty shirt
I have nobody to wash it for me

You can listen to it here.

Stay tuned next week for the final letra of 2014 and the final installment of this series of bulerías shared by Zorri. (Don't worry, you'll see more letras from him here and there in the future.)

How I Overcame my Fear of Bulerías (and why I used to hate this dance)

How I Overcame my Fear of Bulerías (and why I used to hate this dance)

My main obstacle to bulerías has always been fear.

Not trusting my instincts.

It's no different from my main obstacle in life

I know indecision well.

No wonder bulerías has always been so hard for me,

Not enough trust.

In a moment I'll tell you how I've let go of a lot of my bulerías fears (and how you can do the same).

Because the truth is, now I kind of can't get enough of bulerías.

It is not that the fear has been eradicated, it's that the excitement and fun usually slide it over to the side now.  Gracias excitement and fun.

But before I get into any fear eradication techniques, let me give you a bit of background:

Sleeping with Bulerías | Viernes con una Letra

Below find a snippet of my journal from Jerez, a video of Mercedes Ruíz dancing bulerías, a letra por bulerías, and a short activity for you to do while watching the video.

October 30, 2013

I played bulerías to help me fall asleep during siesta time.

Bulerías with lots of palmas and jaleos of course.

Who does that?

Someone who is in Jerez I guess.

Someone who is in Jerez and  just can't get enoughIt's a good thing I'm going back.

I listened to one that I recorded at the peña last night.
