She Wants It To Be Real | Viernes con una Letra

This afternoon I was working on the letra.

I translated it, wrote it out, took a picture of it, and then decided I’d better hurry up and take a quick walk before the sun went down. It was nice out, and I could finish the post later.

It began to rain minutes after I began my walk.

I guess I needed to be rained on.

The sky had given me no indication that this was going to happen. It had been sunny all day, and all I noticed were beautiful nearning sunset colors from the moment I stepped outside. So many colors and shades of brightness that I didn’t really see the grey rain clouds.

I notice lots of things,

But sometimes I miss certain things that would be most helpful to notice,

Be Careful With That Cat | Viernes con una Letra

This is a letra that Zorri sang the other night.

Watching Zorri laugh after singing it was the best, and then hearing him laugh because, well, if you've ever heard his laugh,

It's a laugh that makes you laugh. That on top of the meaning of the letra, let's just say it made for a good laughing session.

Bulerías
Popular

Ten cuidao con ese gato
que se coma una a una
las sardinitas del plato

Be careful with that cat
because one by one it eats
the little sardines from the plate

We were supposed to go to a tablao that night, but that didn't happen.

I Want to Get Drunk | Viernes con una Letra

It is Halloween, and I just returned home from the peña. I am in Jerez.

On the way I saw a family dressed up in zombie-style Halloween costumes. Their two dogs were dressed as jack-o-lanters.

At the peña

We saw Manuel Agujetas Hijo sing with Domingo Rubichi accompanying on guitar.

Below is a letra por fandangos that he sang.

(You can hear El Chocolate singing it here.)

Fandangos

No me quites la botella
que yo me quiero emborrachar
no me quites la botella
voy a beber de verdad
y a ver si no pienso en ella
y yo la consigo olvidar

How I Overcame my Fear of Bulerías (and why I used to hate this dance)

How I Overcame my Fear of Bulerías (and why I used to hate this dance)

My main obstacle to bulerías has always been fear.

Not trusting my instincts.

It's no different from my main obstacle in life

I know indecision well.

No wonder bulerías has always been so hard for me,

Not enough trust.

In a moment I'll tell you how I've let go of a lot of my bulerías fears (and how you can do the same).

Because the truth is, now I kind of can't get enough of bulerías.

It is not that the fear has been eradicated, it's that the excitement and fun usually slide it over to the side now.  Gracias excitement and fun.

But before I get into any fear eradication techniques, let me give you a bit of background:

How I Went In | Class With Mercedes

"I want to be in class with Mercedes ALL of the time." That is what I wrote in my journal on April 13, 2011.

But let's go back in time.

I arrived in Jerez on Friday, March 25 and began investigating classes to take.

Though secretly, I did not want to go to any.

A week in Jerez by myself.

Flamenco Guitarist Santiago Lara, a Video Interview

When we're on the FlamencoTour, we hear Santi practicing. A lot.

Santiago Lara, that is.

We're in the studio dancing.  He's either in the bathroom or upstairs practicing.

When it's time to play for us Mercedes calls for him,

"Santi!"

I can hear her saying it now.

Actually, if you listen carefully you can hear her saying it in the video below at about 1 minute 50 seconds...

I first interviewed him in the spring of 2013.  Unfortunately, I lost all of that footage.  I know, back up.

So, I interviewed him again last fall.

It Wasn't Like My Fantasy

It Wasn't Like My Fantasy

I mentioned that I had this fantasy of dancing on rooftops before I went to Spain for the first time. Once I settled in Sevilla and found my apartment, I was overjoyed to discover that it had an azotea.

azotea - rooftop

I wanted to go up there with my character shoes. Yes, character shoes. I was so stubborn, so green that I didn't believe having actual flamenco shoes would make that much of a difference when dancing. Anyway, I wanted to go up to try to practice the little that I could remember from class.

Carolina, my roommate, told me to make sure that the door didn't close or I would be locked up there with no way of getting down. I think she may have thought I was nuts.

So one day I went up to dance on the roof

It was sunny and beautiful. Springtime and not too hot.

But it wasn't like my fantasy.

"We're all Pursuing a Dream and a Passion"

"We're all Pursuing a Dream and a Passion"

Today I want to show you a video of Becky and Aida from the rooftop of our apartment in the Barrio San Miguel, an important flamenco neighborhood in Jerez.

They describe their time in Jerez together.

They talk about being in bulerías class,  In the words of Becky,

"You soon realize that you have the support of everybody in the room.  Not only your fellow travelers, but everybody else who’s there.  Everything is there.  The music.  The singing.  The jaleos.  The palmas.  You can really have some amazing breakthroughs."

And they talk about the togetherness of the group,

"We were on the same page, everybody," Aida says.

They talk about other things too.  Hear what they have to say in the video below.

Mercedes Ruíz serving sherry to Us!

When I first got the idea for the Flamenco Tour to Jerez I envisioned a private workshop with Mercedes Ruíz.

That's it.

Nothing more.

A class just for me

Well, and the other people I would bring with me.

I was in Jerez studying, taking classes from Mercedes and others.

I felt pushed and pulled in all different directions.  Confused and overwhelmed with all of the different choreographies, the choreographies that I had walked in on the middle of.

I didn't like it.

I was supposed to be having fun, but it was feeling stressful instead.

An Interview with Marco Flores

An Interview with Marco Flores

On the wall of her studio Mercedes has a photo of herself with Marco Flores when they were young.  I wish you could see it.   In the interview that follows Marco mentions how they danced together when they were starting out.  They still do.

You'll also find out about how Marco grew up with flamenco in his family, how he began his career, and about his process of creation.  He even shares some direct tips for us as students, though bits of advice can be found in all of his responses.

I originally posted it in 2011 and repost it today after watching snippets of his latest espectáculo from the 2014 Jerez Festival.  Oh how I want to see that show!  Further down you'll see a video of him dancing solo por siguiriyas.
